Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)

Food

Located between South Africa and Mozambique, many restaurants in eSwatini are now highly influenced by South African and Portuguese flavours. However, for those keen to get a taste of genuine Swati food, here are a few traditional meals.

Maize

Roasted or boiled (“Tinkhobe”), maize (corn) on the cob is a popular “in-betweener”.

Umncweba and umkhunsu

Umncweba is dried, uncooked meat (made with various types of meat). It is often marinated in vinegar and spices and eaten as a snack. Umkhunsu is the cooked version of umncweba: it is simply cooked before being dried.

Emasi

“Emasi” – or sour milk – is a delicacy in eSwatini. It’s made from cow’s milk, which is fermented and then strained. It can be consumed on its own (as it is quite filling) or mixed with ground maize (“emasi etinkhobe temmbila”) or sorghum (“emasi emabele”).

Umbidvo wetintsanga

Cooked pumpkin leaves mixed with peanuts is a common dish in eSwatini and across Southern Africa.

Sidvudvu

Porridge made of pumpkin mixed with maize meal
