  • The official languages are Sesotho and English
  • A minority of Basotho (less than 10%), speak
    • Zulu, one of the eleven official languages of South Africa
    • Phuthi, a Nguni language closely related to Swazi, an official language of South Africa and Swaziland, is spoken by approx 2% Basotho (in addition to Sesotho).
    • Xhosa, another Nguni language and official language of South Africa, is spoken by less than 1% people in Lesotho (in addition to Sesotho)
    • Afrikaans, spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia, is a legacy immigrant language in Lesotho
