Zimbabwe

Food

Zimbabwe’s staple food is maize. “Sadza” makes up the main component of meals and is made from pounded white maize or Maize meal. It is served with “relish”, a.k.a stew, and vegetables (Pumpkin Leaves, Okra, Kale and many more) and eaten with one’s hands. Accompaniments can vary, Mopane worms are popular for many as is tripe (offal/intestines). Naturally, chicken and beef are consumed using various preparation methods, for example grilled or boiled in stews.

Fish is also commonly consumed. A common type of sardine-like fish (Kapenta) is popular. Due to the plenteous fish available from the lake Kariba, trout, tilapia are a regular accompaniment. Any of these can also be dried and then boiled in a stew.
