Political structure
- Official name: Federal Republic of Nigeria
- Form of state: Federal republic (modelled after the United States), comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT, Abuja)
- Executive power is exercised by the President who presides as both head of state and head of the federal government
- The leader is elected by popular vote to a maximum of two 4-year terms.
- Legal system: Based on English common law
National legislature
- National Assembly, comprising
- The 109-seat Senate and
- The 360-seat House of Representatives;
- Both are elected by universal suffrage for four-year terms

- The last election was held in February 2019;
- The incumbent, Muhammadu Buhari won a second term in office;
- The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a majority in the lower and upper houses.
