Probably the most known Nigerian dish (which for the inexperienced palette is also probably the “safest”) is Jollof rice, which contains rice, onions, tomatoes, chillies and a variety of spices.

Pounded yam. A similar dish is prepared across the continent using a variety of base-starches. “Pap“/”Nshima” in Southern Africa is of a similar texture but is prepared with maize-meal. Pounded yam is eaten with a variety of soups.
