The official language of Botswana is English. However, the most frequently spoken language is Setswana (spoken by over 77.3% of the population – though the real number may be higher). There are a number of other local languages spoken, namely:
- Kalanga (7.4%)
- Kgalagadi (3.4%)
- Shona (2%)
- Mbukushu (1.6%)
- Ndebele (1%)
- Tshwa, a Khoe language (1.7%)
- !Xóõ, a Tuu language (0.1%)
- A small number speak Afrikaans.
