Languages

The official language of Botswana is English. However, the most frequently spoken language is Setswana (spoken by over 77.3% of the population – though the real number may be higher). There are a number of other local languages spoken, namely:

  • Kalanga (7.4%)
  • Kgalagadi (3.4%)
  • Shona (2%)
  • Mbukushu (1.6%)
  • Ndebele (1%)
  • Tshwa, a Khoe language (1.7%)
  • !Xóõ, a Tuu language (0.1%)
  • A small number speak Afrikaans.
